What is the Hair Loss Service?
Alopecia is the general medical term for hair loss. There are many types of hair loss with different causes. Losing your hair isn't usually anything to be worried about but it can be upsetting. We at Boots recognise the sensitivity around this topic, and so provide access to 100% discreet online consultations where no appointment is required. Treatment may help with some types of hair loss, and so we provide access to prescription only treatment options via a third party Online Doctor.
What causes male pattern baldness?
Alopecia (hair loss) affects up to 60% of men, with around 25% starting to lose their hair before the age of 30. The most common form of hair loss in men is known as male pattern baldness, and results from the natural effects of the male sex hormone testosterone. This type of hair loss is passed down through families – you can inherit it from either side. It's caused by the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which causes hair follicles to shrink and eventually stop working.
What are the signs of male pattern baldness?
Hair loss varies from person to person. The first signs are usually a receding hairline and hair thinning at the side and top of your head.
