What is high blood pressure or hypertension?
High blood pressure or hypertension refers to a condition where your heart has to consistently work harder to pump blood around your body. Your heart pumps blood through the blood vessels to the body's organs and the higher the pressure in your system, the more strain is placed on your heart and your organs. If untreated, the vessels called arteries can stiffen and narrow, making it easier for fatty material to clog them up and cause heart and circulatory diseases or heart attack and stroke. You can find more information on hypertension is available on the HSE Website.
