Our green journey

Environmental sustainability is vital to Boots Ireland. We operate on 100% renewable energy & have reached our goal of 0% waste to landfill. Here are a few of our milestones:

  • In 2020, we eliminated 2,020 tonnes of plastic from our Christmas gift ranges by completely removing single-use plastic packaging.
  • In 2021 we marked 25 years of business in Ireland, by starting an initiative to plant 15,000 native woodland trees in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Food, and the Marine's Woodland Environment Fund (WEF).
  • 2022 saw the launch of the Recycle at Boots Scheme, which allows customers to bring their empty beauty, health, wellness & dental products, that can’t be recycled at home, to be recycled at Boots with rewards of Boots Advantage Card Points.

How can I recycle my medicines?

Help protect the environment & dispose of the contents of your prescription bag correctly by taking the following steps:

When disposing of your pharmacy medicine packaging, always remember to cross out or remove personal identifying information.

At Boots Ireland, we are constantly reviewing new opportunities to minimise pharmacy waste & will continue to explore further waste segregation.

Green Pharmacy Task Force at Boots

The Green Pharmacy Taskforce are a group of pharmacists from the Boots Ireland Pharmacy Partnership Panel, committed to sustainability & the environment.

Since its inception in 2021, we have overhauled our pharmacy consumables & their waste management.

We are so proud of our recycled brown prescription bags, our biodegradable grip seal medication bags & we have recently trialled compostable medication bags.

The Green Pharmacy Workforce were also instrumental in setting up the recycling of methadone bottles, which, as of September 2023, has resulted in the recycling of thousands glass bottles generated by Boots Ireland.

Dispensaries at Boots Ireland go green!

Pharmacy teams are at their best when they are with their patients and customers. Accessible, convenient and signposted waste management areas means that pharmacy staff can efficiently and effectively manage (and recycle) waste generated in the dispensing process without delay. To promote and support recycling of dispensary waste, Boots Ireland has moved to a ‘green only’ bin policy in the dispensary area.
