About the RSV Vaccination Service
The service provides those eligible and aged 65 years and over who have a doctor prescription for the RSV vaccine containing administration instruction with a facility to get the vaccine in store. You can complete a doctor consultation with a doctor of your choice including online^ at HealthHero by clicking here†.
The service is offered by specially trained Boots pharmacists in selected Boots pharmacies.
Whilst the RSV vaccine can also be given in pregnancy, if you are pregnant you will not be eligible to receive the vaccination in the pharmacy through this service at this time and we recommend you discuss it with your doctor.
RSV immunisation is being introduced by the HSE for newborn babies in Ireland in 2024 for the first time. This will help protect them from RSV over the winter months and you can find out further information here.
How it works
How long will my appointment take?
The pharmacy consultation will take approximately 10 minutes. You'll need to stay in the pharmacy for around 15 minutes after your vaccination, just in case you have any immediate side effects.
To use the service, you'll first need to have a RSV Vaccination Consultation with your doctor. You can complete this online^ at HealthHero here†. Once you've completed the consultation, you'll need to book an appointment at your chosen Boots pharmacy. You can pay for the service when you attend your vaccination appointment.
Please note that RSV vaccination is not recommended routinely for all adults. If you are aged 60 years or over it is recommended that you discuss with your doctor whether RSV vaccination may be of benefit to you. Please see the Frequently Asked Questions below for further information.
Price
The price of the vaccination is €245.
The service is available in most Boots pharmacies. To check appointment availability, click here and select your preferred county, the store locations and times of available appointments will be displayed on this page.
What is Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)?
RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) is a common virus that causes upper and lower respiratory tract infection and spreads easily through coughs and sneezes. Most symptoms of RSV are mild, such as a runny nose, coughing and sneezing. People usually recover within 2 to 3 weeks without treatment or the need to see a doctor.
Who is at risk of getting severe disease from RSV?
Very young people and older people are most at risk of developing severe disease from RSV, and in particular those with long term health conditions such as lung or heart disease, obesity, diabetes, or a weakened immune system.
What RSV vaccine is offered as part of the service?
There are two RSV vaccines available in Ireland and recommended by the national immunisation advisory committee for use in adults aged 65 years and over. Both vaccine products provide similar protection. The RSV vaccine may be given at any time of the year, but where possible it’s best to get it before the start of the RSV season, which is usually from late September to early October each year.
The vaccine that can be administered as part of Boots RSV Vaccination Service is based on the name of vaccine that your doctor will prescribe, if they consider it of benefit for you.
The vaccination is currently given as a single dose.
