Stop yawning! We've got top tips to fight off tiredness

Lacking in energy? We hear you! You might be asking yourself: “Why am I always tired?” Trust us – it happens to the best of us. If you’ve been burning the candle at either end, or just find your busy life has you feeling drained, we’ve pinned down some tips to help you tackle your tiredness.

Stress less

“Easier said than done,” we hear you say, but feelings of everyday stress can make it difficult for you to switch off. If saying bye forever to the stresses in your life isn’t an option (say no more about work), then there are things you can do to help minimise your stress and maximise your energy levels. Stressing out uses up a lot of energy, so taking time for yourself with calm and relaxing activities such as walking, reading or exercise is important to boosting energy levels.

Eat well

If you’re struggling to stay switched on throughout the day, your eating habits may be in need of a shake-up. We all know the importance of a healthy, balanced diet, and one of the easiest ways to improve energy levels is eating the right amount of good stuff like vegetables, fruit, dairy (or dairy alternatives) and carbohydrates more often. Eating regular meals and snacks throughout the day is a great way to help you feel energised.

Stay hydrated

Many people don’t realise that being dehydrated can also make you feel tired. If drinking more water doesn’t sound like the most appealing thing (after all, not everyone likes the taste – or lack thereof), why not try flavoured water instead? Choose one without artificial flavours or added sugar, sweeteners or preservatives, or make your own by adding fruit like lemon, lime, cucumber and mint.

Make time for magnesium

Magnesium is the mineral you need to know about. It plays a role in helping our body turn the food you eat into energy – pretty important for keeping us firing on all cylinders. We can get it from things like green, leafy vegetables, nuts, brown rice, wholegrain bread, fish and meat.

Get moving

We get it – exercise is the last thing on your mind when you’re lacking energy. In fact, exercising regularly can help to make you feel less tired in the long run, meaning that (yep, you’ve guessed it) you’ll have more energy. Just a short walk at lunchtime, or some gentle exercise in the garden in the evening, can give you the energy boost you’re looking for – and the benefits to your health increases with regular physical activity too. Result!

If you find that you're constantly feeling tired and it’s affecting your daily routine, you should go and talk to your GP.
